In the last approximately 30 years the United States has experienced a huge number of people migrating there. These people are mostly from the developing countries. This is because their socio-economic statuses at home are not attractive when compared to what America has to offer. Furthermore, the U.S immigration policy has made people want to and be able to move to the United States. By the year 2005, there are around 25 million legal immigrants. However, much as this number may seem large, it is also shocking that there were at the same time period, 35 million illegal immigrants (Camarota S.A 2005). Of course this huge number of people will have an impact on the various aspects of the American. It affects the political, cultural and economic aspects of their host country. Although the immigration economists downplay their impact on the economy, one has to note that its impact is felt hugely in the labor market. Mostly the low wages workers feel this impact. They do this by providing a huge supply of labor, which then leads to a reduction of the wages paid. The people who would be most affected by a reduction on numbers of immigrants are the school dropouts and the American born Hispanics and blacks. This is because they compete directly with immigrants in their workplaces. Their level of educations is usually quite low and this therefore means that they can only get menial jobs. These jobs are the same ones that the immigrants come and involve themselves on. These jobs include hospitality, manufacturing, and leisure and construction among many others. It means therefore that they contribute in making the poorest category of people in the United States even poorer. Various researches shows that new immigrants tend to be paid less than the locals are. This is because they lack the skills that are necessary to do even these menial tasks. However, once they have been in the business for sometime, they are able to demand for equal or almost equal pay to the natives. It is assumed that this is because they have less education than the natives but this is debatable. On top of this, some employers especially the Asian and Hispanic employers prefer employing immigrants from their own communities. They tend to say that the African Americans are not as hardworking as the immigrants and hence this increases unemployment and hence poverty among the communities that are discriminated against. Furthermore, these immigrants will not ask for the same amount of wages as the native born black. The assumption and actually expectation of employers that there will be more and more immigrants coming and looking for jobs has led to constant decrease of the wages. The employees who are already working and dissatisfied with their wages will be hard pressed to explain the company that they want a wage increase. This is because there is always the threat of being fired and others being employed. The availability of excess labor tends to act as a barrier to the demands of the employees on the employers. They provide a very large number of workers who are waiting to replace them once they are hired. This therefore keeps them unhappy in their jobs yet they cannot complain about it or fear of being replaced…
